The Glenlivet Founders Reserve Whisky
For their Founders Reserve, The Glenlivet have created an expression which is a tribute to George Smith, their founder.
This has all the classic flavours of The Glenlivet, but is a a smooth creamier expression. They have utilised the time-honoured distillation methods which George Smith used, as well as the same mountain stream water.
This is then matured in traditional oak casks. When George Smith created his blends, there were no age-statements on whisky’s. Instead he utilised his freedom in selecting and blending, and with this expression The Glenlivet have done the same – selecting whisky from traditional ages oak casks from a range of ages. To give a modern twist, their Mast Distiller (Alan Winchester) then marries a selection of the aged oak casks and American first-fill oak casks.
These first-fill oak casks haven’t been used to mature whisky, and when used selectively provide a smooth, creamy sweetness. This intermingles perfectly with the delicate flavours and fruity tonies already in the whisky.
The result is a whisky that The Glenlivet believe their founder would approve of. It has a pale gold colour, which gives an aroma full of sweet citrus fruits, with orange being predominant.
In the mouth the orange again comes through, with a zestiness which is complimented by pear flavours and a touch of toffee apples. The flavours give a delicious blend of creamy sweetness and a refreshing zestiness from the citrus. The finish is pleasantly long, very smooth and creamy right to the end.
